💧 Watering Schedule
- New sod (first 2–3 weeks): Water twice a day — 15–30 minutes in the morning AND 15–30 minutes in the evening — until the roots have taken hold. Never water in the middle of the day; sun plus water can cook new sod.
- Established lawn: 15–30 minutes every morning. Add a short evening session only in peak summer heat above 95°F.
- Best time to water: Always early morning, 5–10am. Evening watering in Houston's humidity is the single biggest cause of brown patch and gray leaf spot disease.
- The finger test: Stick a finger into the soil — if mud sticks to it, skip watering that day.
- St. Augustine: Needs the most water of the three types — about 1–1.5 in/week in summer.
- Bermuda: About 1 in/week in growing season — the most drought-tolerant type we carry. TifTuf Bermuda specifically uses 38% less water than standard Bermuda.
- Zoysia: Deep, infrequent watering once established — about 1 in/week in summer, ½ in spring/fall, twice a week maximum. Overwatering established Zoysia causes large patch disease.
