What Grows Best in The Woodlands
Because of the heavy tree cover — especially live oaks — shade-tolerant grass is almost always the right call in The Woodlands. Our top picks here are Palmetto St. Augustine, Amerishade St. Augustine, and Zeon Zoysia. Zeon in particular is a premium barefoot-friendly grass that handles 3–4 hours of sun and is used on golf courses like Bluejack National right here in Montgomery County. For full-sun areas, Raleigh St. Augustine and Bermuda varieties work great. If you're not sure what you have, just describe your yard and we'll figure it out together.
Live oak roots in The Woodlands often surface above the soil line — especially in older neighborhoods. Before laying sod, we recommend adding 2–4 inches of Enriched Topsoil to cover those roots and give your grass a healthy base to take root in. About The Woodlands
The Woodlands was founded in 1974 by George P. Mitchell and has grown into one of the most recognized master-planned communities in the country — regularly named one of the best places to live in America. It spans Montgomery and Harris counties and is made up of nine distinct residential villages, each with its own character and feel.
The tree canopy here is unlike anywhere else in the Houston area. Live oaks, loblolly pines, and hardwoods line most streets, creating that signature shaded, lush feel that Woodlands residents love. It's also what makes grass selection so important — not every variety will survive under a heavy canopy, and we've seen a lot of lawns struggle because the wrong grass was installed.
For most Woodlands yards, Palmetto or Amerishade St. Augustine are the safe bets for shaded areas. Zeon Zoysia is a premium upgrade that's worth the investment for homeowners who want a beautiful low-maintenance lawn that stays dense even in lower light. For the sunny spots — driveways, open back yards, pool areas — Raleigh St. Augustine or TifTuf Bermuda are excellent choices.
One thing we see a lot in The Woodlands is live oak root systems that come up above the soil surface — especially in the older villages like Grogan's Mill and Panther Creek. The fix is simple: a couple of inches of Enriched Topsoil spread over the roots before sodding gives the grass a clean base and covers up those bumpy root systems. We carry Enriched Topsoil by the yard and deliver same day.
