Note that Tifway’s drought tolerance is only “Medium” — lower than Celebration or TifTuf. Its strength is density and wear resistance in full sun, not water efficiency.
Recommended Mowing Height & Frequency
This is the defining feature of Tifway 419: mow it at 0.5–1.5 inches, every 4–5 days during peak season. That’s the shortest recommended height and the most frequent mowing schedule of any grass we sell — closer to what you’d expect from a reel mower on a golf green than a typical home lawn mower.
If you’re not prepared to mow twice a week in summer, Tifway 419 will get away from you fast — letting it grow past its target height causes it to thatch up and lose the dense, tight look that’s the whole reason to choose it over Celebration or TifTuf.
Tifway can be scalped in early spring to remove winter-dormant material and speed up green-up, same as other Bermuda varieties.
Watering Needs
Tifway needs about 1 inch of water per week during the growing season, similar to other Bermudas, though its lower drought tolerance means it shows stress sooner in extended dry spells than Celebration or TifTuf.
- New sod: Water twice daily — once in the morning, once in the evening, never during midday heat — for 2–3 weeks, then transition to established watering once rooted (tug-test a corner to confirm).
- Established lawns: Water deeply and infrequently rather than lightly and often — shallow watering encourages shallow roots and makes Tifway more vulnerable to summer heat stress.
Fertilizing & MicroLife Recommendations
Tifway 419 “needs the most fertility of any grass we carry” among Bermuda varieties — skipping applications causes it to thin out visibly faster than Celebration or TifTuf.
- MicroLife Hybrid 20-0-5 is the right choice — apply every 4–6 weeks from May through August at 5–7 lbs per 1,000 sq ft.
- Because Tifway is mowed so short and so often, clippings remove nutrients faster than on taller-cut grasses — staying consistent with the every-4-to-6-week schedule matters more here than with any other variety.
- Work in MicroLife Humates Plus 0-0-4 once or twice a season if you’re on heavy clay, which describes most of the Magnolia and Tomball area — it builds a deeper root system that helps offset Tifway’s more limited drought tolerance.
- Wait 30 days before the first fertilizer application on new sod, and stop nitrogen by the end of August.
Common Problems
- Thinning from under-fertilizing is the most common issue we see — Tifway simply needs more consistent feeding than other Bermudas to maintain its density.
- Armyworms can strip Tifway the same as any Bermuda variety, typically August through October — watch for it.
- Spring dead spot and other fungal issues are more visible on Tifway because the short mow height leaves less canopy to mask early symptoms — inspect closely in spring.
