Zeon is the grass we recommend when someone wants Zoysia’s low-maintenance reputation but their yard has real shade to deal with. It has the highest shade tolerance of any non-St. Augustine grass in our lineup, tolerating as little as 3–4 hours of direct light — a genuinely rare combination for a Zoysia variety, most of which want considerably more sun than that.
Zeon has serious pedigree, too: it’s used at Tiger Woods’s Bluejack National golf course in Montgomery, TX, and it was the turf at the golf course for the 2016 Rio Olympics. It also happens to have the lowest fertilizer needs of any grass we carry, and a soft, barefoot-friendly texture that holds up well to both pets and foot traffic.

Zeon is genuinely one of the more well-rounded grasses on our list — it doesn’t max out any single trait the way Emerald maxes out appearance or Tifway 419 maxes out density, but it performs well across nearly every category at once, including in conditions (partial shade) that usually force a tradeoff.
Recommended Mowing Height & Frequency
Mow Zeon at 1–2 inches, every 7–10 days. Unlike Emerald, Zeon works fine with a rotary mower as long as the blades are kept sharp — you don’t need to invest in specialized equipment to keep it looking good.
As with all Zoysia varieties, expect slower establishment and a slower spring green-up compared to St. Augustine or Bermuda — this is normal for the species and not a sign that anything is wrong.
Watering Needs
Zeon wants deep, infrequent watering once established — roughly 1 inch per week in summer and about half an inch in spring and fall, no more than twice weekly.
- New sod: Water twice daily — once in the morning, once in the evening, never during midday heat — for 2–3 weeks until rooted, then move to the established schedule.
- Established lawns: Zeon’s high drought tolerance means it can go longer between waterings than most of our other grasses — err on the side of underwatering rather than over, since overwatering is the leading cause of large patch disease in Zoysia generally.
Fertilizing & MicroLife Recommendations
Zeon has the lowest fertilizer needs of any grass we carry — 1–2 lbs of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft per year, same ballpark as our other Zoysias but on the low end even within that group.
- MicroLife Multi-Purpose 6-2-4 applied 2 times a season at a standard rate is typically all Zeon needs to maintain good color and density.
- Zeon’s disease resistance is notably good — better than most of our other grass options — which pairs well with its already-low input needs. That said, apply MicroLife Brown Patch 5-1-3 preventively in September and March as cheap insurance against large patch, the main disease risk for any Zoysia in Houston.
- Do not over-fertilize; excess nitrogen increases thatch and disease risk without meaningfully improving Zeon’s already-strong appearance.
- Fall potassium application supports root strength heading into winter.
Common Problems
- Large patch is still possible, though Zeon’s above-average disease resistance makes it less common than with some other Zoysia varieties — overwatering is the usual trigger.
- Slow spring green-up is expected and not a health issue; give it time before assuming something’s wrong.
- Because Zeon tolerates more shade than most Zoysias, homeowners sometimes push it into deeper shade than its 3–4 hour minimum — if light drops below that threshold, it will thin out just like any other grass.
