Recommended Mowing Height & Frequency
Mow TifTuf at 1–2 inches, every 5–7 days during the growing season — the same schedule as Celebration, and noticeably less demanding than Tifway 419’s twice-weekly requirement.
For new sod, start with the mower set high (2–2.5 inches) for the first cut and gradually lower it to target height over the following few mows rather than cutting straight down to 1–2 inches immediately. TifTuf, like other Bermudas, tolerates an early-spring scalp to clear out winter-dormant growth.
Watering Needs
This is where TifTuf sets itself apart: reduce your watering schedule by roughly a third compared to standard Bermuda. Where Celebration or Tifway might need close to an inch a week in peak summer, TifTuf can maintain the same performance on meaningfully less.
- New sod: Water twice daily — once in the morning, once in the evening, never during midday heat — to keep the surface consistently moist. TifTuf’s rapid rooting means it may be ready to slow down closer to the 2-week mark rather than the full 3 (tug-test to confirm), but it still needs consistent moisture to get there.
- Established lawns: Water deeply and infrequently. TifTuf’s root system is bred to reach deeper for moisture, so frequent shallow watering actually works against its natural drought tolerance.

- Because TifTuf is bred for water efficiency, pairing it with MicroLife Humates Plus 0-0-4 once or twice a season is a strong combination on Houston’s clay soils — Humates Plus builds root depth, which reinforces exactly the drought-tolerance trait that makes TifTuf worth choosing in the first place.
- Skip fertilizing for the first 30 days after installation, then apply MicroLife Hybrid at half rate for the first feeding.
- Stop nitrogen by the end of August to avoid pushing tender growth into fall.
Common Problems
- Armyworms remain a risk for TifTuf just as with any Bermuda, typically August–October — inspect regularly during that window.
- Because TifTuf establishes so quickly, the more common “problem” we hear about is homeowners assuming something’s wrong when it’s actually rooting faster than expected — the tug test (gently pulling a corner to check for resistance) is the easiest way to confirm rooting rather than guessing.
- Overwatering out of habit (treating it like St. Augustine) is the most common mistake — TifTuf performs worse, not better, with excess water.
