Zeon Zoysia — Best Overall Shade Performer
Zeon has the highest shade tolerance of any non-St. Augustine grass we carry, and unlike the shade-tolerant St. Augustine varieties, it still handles real foot traffic well — it’s soft and barefoot-friendly, holds up to pets and kids, and was used at Tiger Woods’s Bluejack National course in Montgomery, TX specifically because it performs in filtered light. If you have a shaded yard that also gets regular use, Zeon is usually the best answer.
Amerishade St. Augustine — Deepest Shade Tolerance, Ornamental Use
Amerishade is the deepest shade-tolerant grass we sell, period — it can survive on as little as 3 hours of direct sun. The tradeoff is it’s a specialty product best suited to ornamental shaded zones (under a large oak canopy, side yards that barely see sun) rather than a general lawn grass you walk on daily. Low foot traffic tolerance and slow growth mean it’s not the pick for a shaded backyard where kids play.
Palmetto St. Augustine — The Balanced Shade Choice
Palmetto is Houston’s most popular upgrade for yards with mixed sun and shade — common in older neighborhoods like the Heights, West U, Memorial, and River Oaks with mature tree cover but not deep, constant shade. It has a finer blade and darker color than standard Raleigh St. Augustine, plus meaningfully better shade performance, while still handling light-to-moderate foot traffic.
How to Pick Between Them
- Yard gets 4+ hours of dappled or partial sun, sees regular foot traffic (kids, pets, entertaining): Zeon Zoysia
- Yard gets 4+ hours but you specifically want the classic St. Augustine look and don’t need heavy traffic tolerance: Palmetto St. Augustine
- Yard gets under 4 hours of sun and is more decorative than a play space: Amerishade St. Augustine
Why Full-Sun Grasses Fail in Shade (Not Just “Struggle”)
It’s worth understanding why this matters so much: grasses like Tifway 419 Bermuda (needs 8+ hours) or Raleigh St. Augustine (needs 6-7 hours) don’t just grow a little slower in shade — they thin out, get weedy, and eventually die out in a matter of one or two seasons because they can’t produce enough energy through photosynthesis to survive, let alone recover from mowing or foot traffic. Planting the wrong grass in a shaded yard is one of the most common and most avoidable ways we see people waste money on sod that fails.
One More Option: Reduce the Shade Itself
If a yard is borderline (getting close to the minimum hours but not quite), sometimes selectively thinning tree canopy (not removing the tree, just opening it up) can push a yard from “too shaded for anything” into “workable for Palmetto or Zeon.” Worth a conversation with an arborist before assuming you’re stuck with the deepest-shade options.
