Champions and Older Spring Neighborhoods — More Shade, More Trees
The Champions area, Gleannloch Farms, and older established neighborhoods in Spring have mature trees that create real shade. If you’re in one of these neighborhoods and your yard gets broken sunlight or afternoon shade for most of the day, you’ll want a shade-tolerant variety.
Palmetto St. Augustine is our most common recommendation for shaded Spring yards. It handles 3–5 hours of sun well, stays thick in dappled light, and is the go-to for the Champions-area yards we’ve delivered to over the years. It’s reliable, widely available, and performs consistently in Spring’s conditions.
Zeon Zoysia is the premium option. If you’re in a mature neighborhood and want a fine-textured, low-maintenance lawn that handles shade well and looks sharp year after year — Zeon is worth the extra cost and the extra patience in the establishment phase.
For truly shaded spots — north-facing beds, under heavy oak canopy — try Amerishade St. Augustine, which is specifically bred for low-light conditions.
Newer Developments — Open Lots, Full Sun
Harmony, Northgate Forest, Klein area, and the newer developments along Hwy 249 and Spring Cypress Road tend to have more open, cleared lots without much established tree cover. These yards can support any of the main grass options.
Raleigh St. Augustine is the standard choice here — quick to establish, familiar, handles the Houston climate well.
TifTuf Bermuda is a strong alternative if your lot has full sun and you want to reduce watering. In Spring’s summer heat, having a grass that handles drought without going yellow is a real advantage.
Celebration Bermuda is another solid option for full-sun Spring yards — especially if you have kids, dogs, or a yard that gets regular heavy use.

One Note on Spring’s Soil
Like most of the Houston area, Spring soil runs heavy clay. New construction in Spring — especially the newer builds along Spring Cypress and Hwy 249 — often leaves lots with minimal topsoil. If you’re in a new home or just had your yard graded, add 2–4 inches of enriched topsoil before laying sod. We can deliver both together.
